Yishun Resident Fined S$5000 for Fireworks Near HDB Flats

Yishun Resident Fined S$5000 for Fireworks Near HDB Flats, A man in Singapore was fined
S$5,000 (US$3,700) on Tuesday, May 28th, for igniting a box containing 25 shots of fireworks near
a block of flats in Yishun last month. Noor Azhar Abdul Abas, aged 40, pleaded guilty to one charge of discharging dangerous fireworks.

The incident unfolded at a grass patch near Block 644 Yishun Street 61 on April 9, which was the eve
of Hari Raya Puasa, occurring at approximately 10:40 pm.

An eight-second video of the incident, captured by a resident, was posted on the social media
platform TikTok, depicting the fireworks igniting within the housing estate. However, the video has
since been removed.

The court was informed that in March of this year, Noor Azhar purchased a box containing 25 tubes
of fireworks labeled “Happy Boom Shoot” from an unidentified individual in the Geylang area. He
planned to use them during the Hari Raya Puasa celebrations the following month.

On the eve of Hari Raya, Noor Azhar discharged the fireworks at the grass patch in Yishun, causing
them to reach approximately 10 storeys high and lasting for about two minutes. However, court documents did not specify whether this grass patch was near Noor Azhar’s residence.

Due to the disturbance and spectacle caused by the fireworks, members of the public grew alarmed and notified the police. Through surveillance cameras in the area, the police were able to trace Noor Azhar.
