“TOKYO: “US & Japan to Hold Security Talks on Jul 28″, Foreign and defense ministers from Japan and the United States will convene for security talks on July 28. The meeting aims to advance what US President Joe Biden described as a significant enhancement of the alliance.”
The upcoming “2+2” talks between Japan and the United States, scheduled for July 28, will focus on extended deterrence. This term refers to the US commitment to utilize both nuclear and conventional forces to deter attacks on its allies, according to Japan’s foreign ministry announcement on Monday.
During the visit, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will hold a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa. Additionally, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will engage in trilateral talks with his counterparts from Japan and South Korea.
In April, Tokyo and Washington announced a series of initiatives to enhance their alliance, described by Biden as the most significant upgrade since the inception of the US-Japan alliance in 1951.
These initiatives include efforts to deepen cooperation between defense industries and upgrade military command structures for better coordination. Both countries aim to deter regional threats perceived from China, North Korea, and Russia.
“These historic 2+2 talks will solidify our shift from a focus on Alliance protection to one of Alliance projection,” stated US ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel.
“Through a transformation of the command structure of the United States forces in Japan, aligned with Japan’s own groundbreaking launch of its joint command next March, the Alliance will be ready and equipped to respond to the security challenges of the Indo-Pacific for decades to come.”
