In a strategic move to bolster its position in the global AI race, the U.K. government has announced a significant investment of £225 million, equivalent to $273 million, into the development of a cutting-edge artificial intelligence supercomputer. The supercomputer, named Isambard-AI in honor of the renowned 19th-century British engineer Isambard Brunel, is anticipated to propel the country’s ambitions in the realm of advanced technology, as it endeavors to narrow the gap between leading nations such as the U.S. and China.
The University of Bristol has been entrusted with the construction of Isambard-AI, the details of which were unveiled at the commencement of the U.K.’s AI safety summit, currently underway at the historic Bletchley Park.
Emphasizing its groundbreaking capabilities, the U.K. government has highlighted that Isambard-AI will emerge as the most sophisticated computer in the nation, boasting a performance that is projected to surpass that of the U.K.’s current fastest machine by a factor of ten. The supercomputer will incorporate 5,448 GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips, advanced AI chips supplied by the prominent U.S.-based semiconductor giant Nvidia, renowned for its specialization in high-performance computing applications.
The construction of Isambard-AI will witness collaborative efforts, with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the American IT behemoth, joining forces to bring the project to fruition. Additionally, plans are in place to establish connectivity between Isambard-AI and the newly announced Cambridge supercomputer, Dawn. The latter, powered by over 1,000 Intel chips utilizing water-cooling technology to curtail power consumption, is scheduled to commence operations within the next two months.
The U.K. government has articulated its optimistic aspirations for the combined capabilities of the two supercomputers, foreseeing significant breakthroughs in the domains of fusion energy, healthcare, and climate modeling. The projected timeline for the deployment of these groundbreaking machines is the summer of 2024, a development that is poised to facilitate researchers in conducting in-depth analyses of advanced AI models, thereby enabling comprehensive testing of safety features and propelling advancements in vital areas such as drug discovery and clean energy.
