“Qatar’s Younousse Eyes Another Medal”

PARIS: “Qatar’s Younousse Eyes Another Medal”, Cherif Younousse, who began his journey in elite beach volleyball later than many of his peers, is now heading to the Paris Games with a noteworthy accomplishment under his belt an Olympic bronze medal. Despite his relatively late start, Younousse has rapidly ascended the ranks, demonstrating remarkable skill and determination as he prepares for the upcoming competition.

The 29-year-old Cherif Younousse and his partner Ahmed Tijan launched their Olympic campaign with an impressive performance, securing three consecutive victories in the pool stage. Their standout match occurred on Monday, where they staged a dramatic comeback after losing the first set to defeat the top-ranked Swedes, David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig. This resilient victory underscored their readiness and determination as they advance through the competition.

Despite their strong start at the stunning venue nestled beneath the Eiffel Tower, the African-born duo remains grounded. Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan are not letting their early success cloud their focus. They are maintaining a disciplined approach, aware of the challenges ahead as they continue their Olympic journey. Their modesty and concentration reflect their commitment to navigating the competition with both skill and humility.

Younousse was born in Senegal, where he grew up played volleyball on the beaches of the capital Dakar before his family moved to Qatar.

“It was very tough and long journey. I started playing for the army club in Qatar for a couple of years in the league and in 2014 we started playing on world stage.”

Younousse thinks not playing at the highest level earlier did put him at a disadvantage.

Younousse and Gambian-born Tijan, however, aced, blocked and bumped their way to the Olympic podium in Tokyo three years ago to give Qatar its first medal in the sport.
