PARIS: Kenyan athlete Hellen Obiri aims for gold at the Paris Games, transitioning to the Olympic marathon after securing two silver medals in the 5,000 meters.
Obiri, known for her achievements in the 5,000 meters with two world championship titles, has successfully transitioned to marathon running. Since her debut in the marathon in 2022, she has demonstrated her endurance capabilities by winning twice in Boston and once in New York. Her adaptation to longer distances highlights her versatility and determination in pursuit of athletic excellence beyond the track.
Obiri told Reuters, “I know Paris, it will be a tough course but winning those two marathons gives me a lot of hope, a lot of confidence, and a lot of excitement.”
Obiri, aged 34, will encounter tough competition in Paris, notably from defending champion Peres Jepchirchir. Jepchirchir made history by winning the New York City Marathon shortly after securing gold in Tokyo. She has also claimed victories in prestigious marathons like London and Boston, adding to the formidable challenge Obiri will face in her pursuit of Olympic success.
Obiri remains undaunted as she prepares to tackle a marathon course in Paris that traces one of the pivotal historic events of the French Revolution in 1789. This unique backdrop adds an additional layer of significance and challenge to her quest for Olympic glory in the marathon event.
Obiri is embracing her growing celebrity in Paris, celebrating the release on YouTube of a short film “The Heart to Race” which details her personal journey as an athlete, produced by sponsor and Swiss sportswear brand On.
“It’s most encouraging to young generations, to young people in sports,” she said. “Where you come from – it doesn’t matter.”
