Magma had been accumulating underground since the last eruption in February, prompting authorities to warn of an imminent eruption.
The recent eruption marks the seventh occurrence on the Reykjanes peninsula near Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, since 2021. This resurgence in volcanic activity follows around 800 years of dormancy in the geological systems of the area.
A volcano in Iceland, which erupted on Saturday for the fourth time since December, continues to emit smoke and bright orange lava into the air as of early Monday. However, authorities have assured that infrastructure and a nearby fishing town remain safe for the time being.
Man-made barriers have been successful in steering the lava away from infrastructure including the Svartsengi geothermal power plant and Grindavik, a fishing town of some 4,000 residents.
