Gan Kim Yong to become DPM in Singapore Cabinet changes, Singapore’s incoming Prime Minister Lawrence Wong unveiled a Cabinet reshuffle on Monday (May 13), appointing Mr. Gan Kim Yong to the position of Deputy Prime Minister. This move reflects a strategic effort to ensure continuity and stability as the government approaches the end of its current term.
Mr. Gan, aged 65, will retain his role as the Trade and Industry Minister while also assuming the position of Acting Prime Minister in the Prime Minister’s absence.
In addition to his roles as Trade and Industry Minister and Acting Prime Minister, Mr. Gan will also assume the chairmanship of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Furthermore, he will take on the responsibility of overseeing the Strategy Group within the Prime Minister’s Office.
Mr. Gan will assume his new roles on Wednesday, coinciding with Mr. Wong officially assuming leadership from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Mr. Wong, aged 51, also revealed additional promotions and appointments on Monday. However, there were no significant changes to the ministers leading each ministry in this reshuffle.
Addressing reporters at a press conference held at the Istana on Monday, Mr. Wong emphasized that continuity and stability are pivotal factors as the government nears the end of its current term.
“All the ministers are currently engaged in significant work, with some having recently launched new programs within their ministries. In order to prevent any disruptions, I have chosen to maintain them in their current positions until the end of the term,” stated Mr. Wong.
Mr. Wong further elucidated that he will retain his position as Finance Minister even upon assuming the role of Prime Minister on May 15.
