Discord has announced its plan to sell official game-themed items in its store. The in-app store, introduced in November, initially offered avatar decorations and profile effects for purchase. Due to the popularity of anime and fantasy effects, Discord is now collaborating with game developers to produce versions themed around various games.
The Discord team expressed their awareness of user feedback regarding desired decorations, stating in a blog post, “We’ve heard a lot of feedback on the kinds of decorations that you’d like to see, including cosmetics themed to the games you love.” They have devised a method to fulfill these requests by collaborating with developers to introduce game-themed profile effects and avatar decorations to the Shop. Importantly, the revenue generated from these purchases will be shared with developers, allowing them to earn additional income from their creative contributions through Discord.
Discord is currently keeping the details of the game developers and specific items under wraps, with a promise to disclose more information in the upcoming weeks. The introduction of revenue-sharing for profile effects coincides with another developer-oriented enhancement on Discord known as Quests. Discord has been testing the Quests feature for the past year, enabling users to earn in-game items by streaming their gameplay to friends during calls.
Discord conducted a Fortnite Quest last year, where users could earn an in-game wrap by streaming Fortnite to a single friend for at least 15 minutes. Now, Discord is expanding sponsored Quests to include more game developers. This suggests that we can anticipate a variety of skins and in-game items becoming available through Discord, similar to the drops commonly found on platforms like Twitch or Amazon Prime.
