“Delta Cancels 600 Flights Monday Due to Cyber Outage”

“Delta Air Lines cancelled over 600 flights on Monday (Jul 22) as the US carrier grappled with ongoing disruptions following a global cyber outage last week. Meanwhile, other airlines were making strides in recovering from the incident.”

“FlightAware data shows that as of 7am EST, approximately 16% of Delta’s flights, out of roughly 1,100 flights to or from the United States, had been cancelled due to the cyber outage.”

The cyber outage has left thousands of Delta travelers stranded across the United States, forcing some to rent cars for long drives while others face potential waits of days for new flights or have had to cancel their trips altogether.

Delta, based in Atlanta, is grappling with operational challenges following a cyber outage that impacted its crew tracking system. The airline has now canceled over 5,000 flights since Friday.

A Delta spokesperson did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

A software update by global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike triggered system problems for Microsoft customers, including many airlines, on Friday.

While other US airlines have largely recovered, Delta continues to face challenges in returning to normal operations. American Airlines cancelled 1% of its flights on Monday, and United Airlines cancelled less than 1%.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian said over the weekend that the CrowdStrike issue affected its Microsoft Windows systems, snarling a critical application.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke with Bastian over the weekend, according to an official, reminding him of the carrier’s responsibilities to customers and the department’s enforcement role.
