Chasing 299, South Africa appeared comfortable at 209/5, but the momentum shifted when Deepti Sharma struck with crucial wickets. Her brilliant spell of 5 for 39 in 9.3 overs, including the dismissal of captain Laura Wolvaardt, triggered a collapse that saw the Proteas bowled out for 246.
Both players shone in the grand finale Shafali Verma was named Player of the Match for her all-round performance, while Deepti Sharma earned the Player of the Tournament award for her consistent brilliance throughout the competition.
The champions received a record ₹37.3 crore in prize money, reflecting a 239% increase from the previous edition and marking a new era for women’s cricket in India. The World Cup’s success has significantly boosted the sport’s visibility and growth potential both nationally and globally.
Nationwide celebrations followed as President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team. The President hailed the win as a “landmark moment that will inspire future excellence in women’s cricket,” while the Prime Minister praised the squad’s “skill, unity, and determination” throughout the tournament.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Home Minister Amit Shah also extended their wishes, describing the victory as a proud achievement that has “lifted India’s sporting spirit to new heights.”
