Harris Hits the Trail After Securing Democratic Nomination

Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, launched her campaign trail on Tuesday from Washington. Having secured her party’s nomination, Harris chose Wisconsin as her first battleground state. Her agenda included intensifying criticisms of Republican contender Donald Trump.

Kamala Harris swiftly secured enough delegates to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination in just 36 hours. Her rapid ascent followed President Joe Biden’s unexpected exit from the race, which set off significant political turbulence, marking one of the most notable election upheavals in recent US history.

Hollywood star George Clooney – one of the first high-profile Democratic activists to urge Biden to drop his reelection bid – on Tuesday joined a series of heavyweights in backing 59-year-old Harris to face Trump in November.

On her trip to Milwaukee, Harris is expected to launch another attack on convicted felon Trump as she leans into her past role as a California prosecutor and state attorney general.

Harris should now be able to secure the nomination on Aug 7 – nearly two weeks before the Democratic convention in Chicago. The party plans to hold an online vote of convention delegates.

“President Biden has shown what true leadership is,” Clooney said in a statement to CNN. “We’re all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice President Harris.”

Milano 2026 Explores Alternative Plans for Sliding Centre

PARIS: Milano 2026 Explores Alternative Plans for Sliding Centre,Organisers of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics stated on Tuesday that they are continuing to evaluate alternative plans for a sliding centre, despite the Italian government’s commitment to construct a new one for the Games.

In February, the Italian government finalized an agreement with a construction firm to build a new sliding track in Cortina for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, opting against using an existing track in a neighboring country despite opposition from the IOC.

The IOC had consistently expressed concerns about constructing a new sliding centre, urging organisers to utilize existing venues in nearby countries to reduce costs and streamline preparation times.

The Italian government, however, said it wanted to host all competitions within its borders.

“Totally aware of the very challenging timeline and of the serious doubts many of you in this session have, I am sure you understand it is not possible for an organising committee to reject a government decision,” Milano-Cortina CEO Andrea Varnier told the IOC session.

The IOC is eager to avoid construction of venues that will get little or no use after the Olympics. Neighbouring France, Switzerland and Austria have sliding centres, as does Germany.

Kristin Kloster, who heads the IOC’s coordination commission of those Games said progress on the sliding project was proceeding according to plan despite tight deadlines.

“The IOC will remain watchful as timelines are tight.”

CAAS Suspends Drone Model After Crash at One-North Condo.

SINGAPORE: CAAS Suspends Drone Model After Crash at One-North Condo, The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has suspended the drone operations of a commercial unmanned aircraft (UA) operator and halted the use of a specific drone model. This action follows a crash involving the drone at a condominium in the one-north area on Jul 19.

On that day, the operator of the drone, H3 Dynamics Holdings, conducted a series of unmanned aircraft (UA) flights using the Hexadrone TUNDRA 2 at the One-North drone estate, according to CAAS on Tuesday. The flights were focused on developing a command control station for the UA over the PIXEL building premises.

“At about 6pm, during its eighth flight of the day, the UA flew outside of its approved activity area and crash-landed on the grounds of One-North Residences,” added the authority.

While no injuries were reported from the incident, CAAS stated that it “takes a serious view of this incident and is conducting a full investigation.”

In 2018, one-north was designated as Singapore’s first drone estate to “facilitate the trial of innovative UA systems technologies and commercial use-cases in a controlled urban environment”, according to the authority’s website.

Approved operators and research users can carry out their drone trials and operations at one-north without compromising safety and security as part of the initiative.

Preliminary findings have revealed there was a malfunction of the UA’s positioning sensors, which caused it to deviate from its planned flight, CAAS said.

While the authority noted that there are no other Hexadrone TUNDRA 2 models registered for use in Singapore, other than the one that was operated by H3 Dynamics Holdings, it urged all UA operator permit holders to review their safety procedures and processes.

Briton Dujardin Withdraws Amid FEI Investigation.

PARIS : Briton Dujardin Withdraws Amid FEI Investigation, Britain’s joint-most decorated female Olympian Charlotte Dujardin has pulled out of the Paris Games due to investigation by equestrian’s governing body, the six-times medallist said on Tuesday.

Dujardin did not elaborate on the investigation but revealed the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) were looking into an old video where she admitted to making an “error of judgement” and apologised.

“A video has emerged from four years ago which shows me making an error of judgement during a coaching session,” she said in a statement.

“Understandably, the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) is investigating and I have made the decision to withdraw from all competition – including the Paris Olympics – while this process takes place.

“What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in that moment.”

Dujardin won three golds, a silver and two bronze medals at the London, Rio and Tokyo Games.

BBC to Cut 500 Jobs to Become ‘More Agile’

LONDON: BBC to Cut 500 Jobs to Become ‘More Agile’, The BBC plans to cut 500 jobs by early 2025, aiming to save £200 million (US$258 million) and transform into a “leaner, more agile organization,” according to an announcement made on Tuesday (Jul 23) by the British public service broadcaster.

The redundancies, intended through role closures, transfers, and new positions in “growth areas,” mark the BBC’s response to financial constraints and inflationary pressures, reflecting ongoing efforts to streamline operations and adapt to evolving challenges in broadcasting.

The broadcaster, funded primarily by the £169.50 annual licence fee paid by UK households watching live TV channels, faces challenges from shifting media consumption habits towards streaming and on-demand services.

The BBC saw a £80 million decrease in licence fee income over the last year, primarily due to a two percent decline in sales volumes and unchanged licence fee pricing.

The number of active licences dropped from 24.4 million in 2022-23 to 23.9 million by the end of last year, according to the annual report.

According to the annual report, the number of active licences decreased from 24.4 million in 2022-23 to 23.9 million by the end of last year.

“We need to create a leaner, more agile organization and seize the digital-first opportunity to redesign our processes, reduce costs, and better serve our audiences,” said Davie.

“We also need to explore the best long-term funding options to safeguard the full benefits of universal public service broadcasting for the future,” Davie emphasized.

The BBC chief emphasized the need for discussions with the government on the “appropriate funding approach” for the BBC World Service, especially at “a critical moment for global democracy.”
