Net migration to the United Kingdom hit a record 764,000 in 2022 and fell 10 per cent to 685,000 in 2023, but is more than double its level in 2015, just before the Brexit referendum.

Reducing immigration was a key goal of many Britons who voted to leave the European Union.

The previous Conservative government of Britain aimed to reduce net immigration, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party also pledged in the election campaign to achieve this by reducing the economy’s reliance on foreign workers.

Zourabichvili reposted comments on Facebook by her representative in parliament saying the law violated a clause in the Georgian constitution requiring the government to take all possible efforts to join the European Union and NATO.

“The EU has suspended Georgia’s integration process with the bloc after parliament overrode President Zourabichvili’s veto to pass the controversial foreign agent law in June. This move reflects concerns over democratic standards and rule of law in Georgia.”

The law requires organisations receiving more than 20 per cent of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence, with stringent disclosure requirements and punitive fines for violators.

He said levels of support from abroad were allowing Ukraine to hold out against Russian attacks but do not give it a sufficient advantage to “win”, without elaborating.
